High school teacher Rebecca Leighton narrowly misses hitting a student
seeking assistance when his car breaks down one rainy night. Soon after she is
harassed by telephone and mail, her house is vandalized, and her life
threatened. With the assistance of a plainclothes policeman, who is attracted
to her, Rebecca tries to determine whether the culprit is the angry student, the
product of a dysfunctional family; the man with whom she has just ended an
affair, or a fellow teacher who has been acting strangely. Marlowe serves a
nice blend of mystery and romance in her third novel, creating believable
characters in nail-biting situations. If Rebecca gets preachy now and then, it
hardly detracts from this well-written and satisfying novel. Mary Higgins Clark
fans will love this. ***
